In 2025–2026, break-ins and key safe thefts increased in Budapest short-term rentals, especially in the city centre. We recommend the following measures:
- Access: use a code lock or smart lock instead of a key safe. Each guest gets a unique code that expires automatically after checkout.
- Camera: you may only place cameras at the entrance, in common areas and outdoors, and you must inform guests in the listing. Cameras in bedrooms and bathrooms are PROHIBITED.
- Insurance: take out home insurance that covers short-term rental activity. Airbnb's AirCover programme covers some damages but does not replace your own insurance.
- Valuables: do not leave valuable items at the property. A locked cabinet or safe for personal belongings is recommended.
